New courses coming soon

We recognise the value of enhancing your skills and earning CPD points to stay on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), and have developed a new Advanced Resistance Training series.

This innovative series of 3 interactive, e-learning short courses, launches in November (you can pre-book onto these courses in October 2009). The Advanced Resistance Training series comprises:

  • Part 1 - Assessing Muscular Fitness
  • Part 2 - Techniques
  • Part 3 - Exercise Prescription.

You can purchase courses individually for £59, book on 2 for £110, or enrol on the 3 part series for just £150.

Each course is based on improving muscular strength and fitness, which is obtained by advanced resistance training, with and without equipment. The courses have been written using the latest research to ensure that they are up-to-date and in-line with the latest industry trends.

Future Fit Training, Training Manager Louise King says, “It’s vital that students have a wide variety of options to progress their knowledge and careers, so we’re working hard to consistently produce products that cater for many areas of the fitness industry.

Burnham unveils physical activity proposals

Health secretary Andy Burnham has announced details of new sports and physical activity schemes that will form part of the government's vision to improve fitness levels throughout the UK. Burnham identified 4 key aims as part of the government's ambitions to establish Britain as one of the healthiest and most active nations in Europe.

With more than 2.5 million people currently on incapacity benefits (costing the economy £13bn and the industry £11bn each year) one of the main targets for the government is to use the National Health Service (NHS) to take a more proactive role in the promotion of healthy lifestyles as a main concern.

A 20% increase in cycling could also save the NHS more than £50m a year in treatments. The government is looking to establish a new inter-department agreement to ensure that healthy living is at the forefront of policy decisions, and it’s also hoped that social attitudes can be altered so that physical activity is seen as a clinical need rather than simply a lifestyle choice.

Dance classes and teen fitness on the up

Dance classes, teen fitness and exercise involving mind-body aspects are among the areas of gym activities that are expected to increase in popularity over the next decade.

The annual Programs & Equipment Trends Report by IDEA Health & Fitness Association (IDEA) shows that 81% of clubs taking part in the survey expected mind & body classes to become more in demand in the future, while only 16% currently offer them.

Other activities deemed to have the most growth potential include teen fitness, social activity groups, such as walking groups and dance classes.
